PROFILE OF DEPARTMENT OF STUDIES IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE
History/Background:

The Department of Studies in English Language and Literature was established in 1967along with the inception of college. English was introduced as the basic subject only forPUC.I.B.A.I and B.SC I in the same year.Shri M. V. Hiremath and ShriH.K.Kamakeri joined theservices on the same date on 1-7-1967. They moulded the department with their academic capacities.

In the academic year 2002-03, English optional was introduced as it was a language ofopportunity. The former principal and the head of the department Prof M.V.Hiremathrenowned teacher of English Language and Literature and writer took initiative. He assisted inthe beginning to mould the department with his administrative acumen. The department plays acrucial role in the march of the institution towards excellence. It has grown in all dimension,teaching, research and extension.

 

The Board of Studies in English RCU designs the syllabi for the courses. From the year 2010onwards, the BOS was done away with purely literary texts and introduced language- basedtexts at the basic level. The optional English curriculum comprises several components like Study of English Phonetics, Literary Forms, Literary Terms, History of English Literature, ModernEnglish Grammar and Usage, Literary Criticism, Poetry, Prose and Drama.CBCS system was introduced in 2020-21.NEP system was introduced in 2021-22. At present the college is affiliated Bagalkote University, Bagalkote

 

During its 57 years of existence, it has maintained high standards and made encouraging andimpressive progress. The analysis of students’ performance in examinations for the last 5 yearsis enclosed. The teachers have taken a keen interest in upgrading both their students andthemselves. Participation in seminars, group discussions and speech skills to achieve academic excellence, are conducted. Guest Lectures are also arranged.

MISSION

     Our Department of English Language and Literature aims of transforming English language learners into the rational human beings with an inquisitive bent of mind through literature, theoretical and linguistic teaching.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT

The main objectives of the department are:

  1. To create awareness among the students about the importance of English Language in the changed world scenario.
  2. To create a deep interest in languages, particularly in English Language and Literature.
  3. To encourage the students to acquire English Language Skills.
  4. To encourage the students to read world famous classics to enable them to cultivatecritical and creative attitudes towards literature.
  5. To inspire the students to participate in debates elocution and other competitions.
  6. To suggest good books for further reading.
  7. To guide them to develop their career by functional English Language.
  8. To prepare them to pass examinations satisfactorily. We have designed someexamination-oriented programmers; say, monthly tests, seminars, assignments, revisions, quiz etc.
  9. To provide exposure to the literary world beyond their curriculum and to inculcate alove for English language and literature.
  10. To provide guidance for higher studies in English Literature.

 To be able to comprehend and interpret minimum literary texts (Poems, Short stories, Plays, Essays). 

 To understand and reflect on literary trends and analyze the contribution of the British writers and the Indian writers in English. 

 The learner should develop confidence in the four skills – Listening, speaking, reading and writing. 

 To be able to do short tasks like drafting letters / absorbs / dialogues / reports and the like. 

 Minimum vocabulary build up, required to structure out their thoughts. 

DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES:

 All our department activities focus on the improvement of the standards of students. For this we-

  1. Conduct seminars for the Optional and Basic English students.
  2. Give at least two assignments to the Optional and Basic English students.
  3. Organize Guest Lectures for Optional English students.
  4. Maintain a record of phonetics work done once in  a week for BA part I Optional English students.
  5. Give short exercises regularly on Modern English Grammar and Usage.
  6. Train the students to have fluency in spoken English.
  7. Organize Remedial Courses in English for the students who are weak in English.
  8. Provide Audio-Visual aids to Optional English students
  9. Conduct two tests and assign projects for both optional and basic English students as per NEP Pattern.
  10. Make Successful technology in teaching.

Consultancy & Research Teaching:

 The Department has conducted a special lecture on ‘ English Phonetics’ under MoU on March 2020 and  a guest lecture on ‘ Effective Communication Skills’ under MoU on 01 Dec 2021.                                                                                                                                      The Department has also conducted students’ seminars on various topics. 

Research

        Dr.S.R.Golagond and Dr.S.S.Daragad, are M.Phil and Ph.D Degree holders. Their Topics of dissertations are ‘Tradition and Modernity in GirishKarnad’s  Plays: A Study of Hayavadana and Tughlaq’ and ‘ Women in the Short Stories of Dr.BasavarajNaikar’ respectively.Their Ph.D topics are-  ‘ The Philosophy of Transcendentalism in the Works of Basavanna and R.W.Emerson: A Comparative Study’, from Karanataka University, Dharwad and   ‘Novel - An Instrument of Social Change with Special Reference to the Novels of Premchand and Maxim Gorky’

 The students graduated from our department pursue their post graduation study. Some of them have become high school teachers and college lectures. Some have taken up jobs in software companies like Wipro, Infosys etc. through campus interviews. To quote a few Miss. Laksakoppad, Miss. ReshmaNaik, KoppadB.R.andBandiS.M.were appointed as High School Teachers. Shri.Pattar C.M., Megur B.Y., ChannabasappaD.were appointed as Lecturers.MuttuKandagal&RaghavendraVaddarwere appointed in cooperative banks. PradeepGarebal was appointed as Village Accountant, SharanappaTariwal&SantoshGarebal were appointed as Constables etc,..

Plan of Action of the Department for the next five years.

The department has the plan to take up minor research projects and the Department also plans to organize state/national level seminars / conferences in the institution.

 Dr.S.R.Golagond is the IQAC and RUSA Coordinator.

  • He is an associate NCC officer from 2006 to 2014.
  • He acted as coordinator of remedial coaching classes.
  • He is a vice president of TalukaVachanaSahityaParishat, Hungund.
  • He is an advisor to BendreSahityaVedike, Hungund
  • He is a member of KRVP, KUCTA, All India English Language Teachers’ Association andEnglish Language Teachers’ Association, Rani Channamma University, Belagavi.

Contribution of faculty in bringing change in the course syllabi

 CBCS system had been introduced from 2020-21 and the NEP system has been introduced from the academic year 2021-22. Therevision of syllabus is done once in three years. The faculty members participated in the meetings of the forum and contributed their ideas in bringing change in the course in the syllabi.

 Learning Resources of the Department:

The department has 22 volumes, 138 titles,  46 Text related DVD's and 13 journals and periodicals in the library.

 The staff and the students are provided with a Computer and Internet facility in the library.

 

Modern Teaching Methods Practiced:

 The department has a sufficient number of cassettes regarding communicative English and personality development. These cassettes are used as teaching aids and displayed on T.V. screens to enrich students' Knowledge.

 Lecture methods, group discussions, seminars, use of audio-visual aids, O.H.P. slides, etc. are used to enhance the knowledge of students and make the classes interesting during the lectures.

 

Participation of Teachers in Academic & Personal Counseling of the Students:

 The faculty Members attend to the personal and academic problems of the students and counseling is also done through Quality Circles. The students are continuously assessed through internal tests. Evaluation of the teacher is also done regularly.
